Went to Tian Korean-Chinese restaurant for lunch today. I posted several reviews of this restaurant since the restaurant's chef seems to change very often...so the taste seems to change often too...It seems like it's new restaurant everytime I go..ha ha ha...I haven't been there for a while since the bad experience I had last time.

Last time I went, their noodles for jjajangmyun seemed to be linguini pasta... And the sauce was weird too. I didn't go back after that.

But I heard that they started handmade noodles plus I was running late. I ate SamsunJjampong- seafood spicy noodle soup. Noodle was little thinner than I expected but it was chewy. Soup wasn't too spicy and just enough for me with lots of veggies. And our server was very nice and polite. Overall my experience today was good enough.

I love eating noodles, pastas, ramyuns...oooo and ramyun is the quickest thing you can cook.

Perfect for the lazy afternoons. I wanted something spicy and sweet but didn't want to eat the hot noodle soup like last time, so I decided to play with this differently (I rarely cook ramyun plain. What's the fun in that?...ha ha).

Got my ramen out.

Cooked it.

Washed it with cold water and drained it so it won't stick to each other and stay chewy.

Made spicy sweet bibim sauce-Cho Gochujang (meaning vinegar added red pepper paste..the one you use for bibimbop or Korean Sashimi). I added red pepper paste, gochujang, sugar, vinegar, and little bit of red pepper flakes. Try mixing them and taste it to see if it's good enough for you. I love vinegar so I always tend to put lots and lots and less sugar. So you be the judge. OR just buy the pre-made one from the store! I found some on eBay too.

Just make sure it has enough vinegary taste to it! That's the key to this noodle. Vinegar!

Prepped veggies. You gotta have some fresh vegetables to have some crunchiness with the chewy bibim noodles.

I steamed bean sprouts, washed, and drained. You must steam soybean sprouts. Mung bean sprouts that you get for pho can be eaten fresh but soybean sprouts...please don't...LOL

I chopped cabbage into strips..and will eat it fresh...but I cut it too wide...next time I've got to cut it very very thin.

After recovering from my nasty flu, my appetite has come back and I am craving so much different foods. I think I'm going to gain too much weight if I eat EVERYTHING I am craving these days...my craving has been going international and out of control...

For lunch, I wanted something instant and fast...but still something with a kick. Spicy and salty...yes...Mmmm

When I went grocery shopping, I realized I haven't been eating canned tuna for a while, so I just grabbed a 4-pack canned tuna today.

I'm planning to go eat Jjajangmyun later tonight (one of my must-eats now) so eating rice will balance the noodle I'm going to eat later. I'm so planned out with meal plans. LOL.

So anyway...if you ever want to try this here are the things I used:

1-2tbsp Gochujang-Red Pepper paste (I didn't try the sweet kind, bibimbap sauce, but I think that could be better)

1/2 cup Kimchi-chopped (you choose if you want more or less)

A can of tuna

ground garlic (OPTIONAL)

AND steamed rice

*WARNING* This might not be your best lunch menu if you are going to eat at an office....^^ I ate at home so please be advised when eating somewhere else.

I got a small pot and put all the ingredients and just heat it up! That's all!!

I prefer Korean Canned Tuna since it's chunkier and 'meaty' but I guess it won't hurt to use any other canned tuna. Bring it to boil and I stirred it on high so everything gets cooked and mixed well together.

After boiling it and stirring it for couple minutes, it turned out like this.

I just got steamed rice and poured it over and mixing time~ Yummm

I had some Romaine Lettuce so I wrapped some and that was pretty good too.

Now...whew I'm full....a cup of just brewed coffee will be nice!

For Christmas, I went to Gool daegee, Honey Pig 2, Korean BBQ Restaurant in Ellicott City with my good friend June. This is the only restaurant around this area
that's 24hours open. Their main specialty is BBQ but they have many other
dishes and Entrees. June and I usually go for Pho to Pho Dat Thanh so a server there remembers us ha ha ha... but we decided to eat something different for
the Christmas.

I haven't had Samgyupsal for the longest time... so
we headed to Honey Pig. Samgyupsal(direct translation meaning Three layered meat) is like bacon but fresh not smoked. Oooooo~

We ordered 2 servings of Samgyupsal and each of us ordered cold noodle soup, Nangmyun. I ordered Mul Nangmyun and June ordered spicy Bibim Nangmyun.

Love these sides that comes with Samgyupsal! If you eat onions, kimchi, sprouts with the bbq...Mmmmmmmmmmm!

Oh and don't forget to eat it with your salad and dipping sauces.

They also gave us green onion Kimchi called PaKimchi as well for bbq. (I love that Kimchi so we asked little more on the side to eat). And love their steamed eggs and DoenJangJjigae (bean paste stew) too.

My Mulnangmyun was good too. I ate it with BBQ. Some eat afterwards but I just enjoyed it together. Put some vinegar and mustard and very nice and cold.

June's spicy Bibim Nangmyun. It's actually sweet and spicy. June couldn't wait for me and just started to mix the sauce.

I had to stop her for a minute and take the picture. Guess June was as excited as I was about our Christmas Lunch..Yes it was lunch;;;;. We were starving so we became real quiet after taking these pictures and started to dig in.

We were very full (we finished it all....!)but we couldn't skip the free Korean style sweet coffee on our way out. They have a machine near the door. Just push the button and small coffee cup will come out....wait little bit till coffee's done and Enjoy~

I usually drink black coffee for the caffeine boost but after eating spicy Korean food, sweet coffee is the best way to wrap up the meal. And did I mention it's FREE? ... Mmmm good~

I also have a picture of other Entree called Bulnak Chulpan-Stir Fry BBQ of Bulgogi + Octopus in Spicy sauce.

I didn't eat it the same day...FYI..this one I ate with a friend. Thanks for the food, San!

On the menu, all the Chulpan menus (not the BBQ but one grill flipped the other way like the picture), when you are almost done with your food ( you gotta leave some to fry with rice), ask your server to stir fry rice with it. Then they'll bring a bowl of rice with lots of veggies and sauce and fry with your leftover entree. That's my favorite part of this menu.

I love eating Chulpan menu for that extra stir fried rice...(I forgot to take a pic of this...will add later when I get to go again).

Anyhow back to Christmas....And that's where I spent my Christmas Lunch...afterwards...I had major food coma for hours...I found Honey Pig 10% off coupon. The link shows lunch specials too...it expires this week so Enjoy!

This is one of the easy recipes for Banchan. If you like crunchy fresh cucumber, this will be perfect banchan for you.

Unlike Quick ‘n Easy Korean Banchan(sidedish)-Fresh Spicy Cucumber Salad Recipe which only uses the flesh part of cucumber (no seeds, no skin), this sidedish just uses the whole cucumber like other regular salads.

Ingredients

1 tbsp sea salt for pickling
1/2 lb cucumber

1 chopped scallion
1 tsp sesame oil
1 tsp sesame seeds
2 tsp red hot pepper flakes
1 tsp sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp minced garlic

*NOTE: salt, sesame oil, pepper flakes, sugar, and garlic are all basic Korean spices. There's no right and wrong amounts to these like all other cuisine. Try it first as the recipe and feel free to adjust to your liking ^-^

First, cut cucumbers like the picture and put sea salt to 'pickle' just little bit. Maybe 15 min. Let it sit for a while...just enough that it's flexible but still fresh and crunchy.

When you think it's enough (don't let it sit tooooooo long), wash and gently squeeze excess water out.
and mix with all other ingredients. Adjust the spices accordingly to your liking.

Enjoy!

So many kinds to choose from and all different variations to cook it too. What's your favorite?

These days you can basically find ramyun everywhere...grocery store...convenient stores...wow...
Not all ramyuns/ramen are spicy so you get to choose from non-spicy, mild, and very spicy!

When you want something really spicy Shin Ramyun is the way to go, but I personally think Shin Ramyun is TOO spicy. But many Koreans like Shin Ramyun.

There are also different kinds of noodles too. Usually noodles are processed 'fried' but with all the well-being craze some ramyuns have not fried noodles.

Instant Cup noodles are also easy and convenient when you don't even want to get a pot out!

When you cook your ramyun if you don't like it too salty, add more water than the direction or add less of the powder sauce. I sometimes add little soysauce and just half the powder.

I don't think there's no right way to eat ramyun. Just enjoy the way you want it.
I always do and try to be creative by adding different stuff in my (too lazy to cook anything else) special ramyun. LOL!

So how do you like your ramyun?

Here's the recipe for spicy chicken bulgogi. You can eat it with rice or some rice noodles. Wanna kick it up even more? Try adding Sriracha Hot sauce~! Hot! Great way to eat some veggies and chicken. Good for healthy eating since not much fat and spicy food 'supposedly' help lose weight. Good to eat but also good for you! Yay!

Following recipe serves about 4 people:

Ingredients

Chicken marinade
2lbs Chicken breast
1/2 cup red pepper paste
1tbsp red pepper flake
1tbsp honey/sugar
1tbsp garlic
1tbsp wine
1tbsp soy sauce
1tbsp sesame oil

Vegetable side
3 scallions
1/4 cabbage
1 carrot
1 green pepper
1/2 green bell pepper
1 onion

Slice chicken to good bite size.

Mix marinade ingredients with chicken.

Slice all vegetables thinly.

First, cook chicken only. Don't cook in the highest temperature. Maybe about 8 for the temp knob.

When the meat is almost cooked, add veggies in and cook thoroughly.

Serve with rice. You can just mix them all together and eat. Yummm
OR with rice noodles. If you need some extra flavor for your noodle, you might consider adding sesame oil and some hot sriracha sauce to noodles. OR you could make extra marinade on the side for the noodles!

TIP If it was too spicy for you, just drink a cup of ice cold milk.

Enjoy!

Vit Goel Restaurant Specializes in Soondooboo/Soondubu Jjigae, which is Soft Tofu stew. I love their stew. There's another Vit Goel in Virginia, but I think Rockville Vit Goel tastes better. Sometimes they expect you to order as soon as you seat down...(impatient servers as usual) but their service is pretty good.

Since it specializes in Soondubu, there are many different style of Soondubu Jjigae and you can choose how spicy your stew will be. You can even choose to make it not spicy at all.

This is the menu on the table. You might need to ask for a menu if you want to order sushi but most of what they offer will be on this small menu. Top half is your choice of Tofu soup and bottom half is different dishes like Galbi, other seafood dishes. They marked spicy ones and nicely described ingredients so you should have no problem.

Soondubu Jjigae is mostly reddish spicy but the name itself doesn't hint that it must be spicy. If you cannot handle spicy just get something not spicy or mild. After all Soondubu Jjigae just means Tofu Stew.

Although there are many different kinds, I find seafood to be the best so far. Mushroom was somewhat disappointing with not much mushroom and meat stew is too greasy for me. But it's my personal preference so let me know if anything else is great!

Also, I always get SPICY and always regret that it's too spicy for me. Note to myself... little spicy not SPICY -_-;; So you too be careful if you can't take it. They give you fresh egg you can crack it yourself as soon as your stew is served so it gets cooked before you eat it. I always crack it and stir from bottom to top so my egg would be thoroughly cooked. Just make sure that if you don't want your yolk to pop just be careful while flipping tofu.

When they serve your stew, they serve rice cooked in Dolsot (Korean Stone Pot) and remember Noorongji? The hard crispy rice on the bottom of Dolsot softened with water is meant to be eaten at the very end of the meal. It helps to calm down all the spiciness and clean out the strong taste of the stew...personally I think it helps digesting too. Sometimes when I don't feel like eating rice itself, I start eating Noorongji with water early with the stew.

They sell sushi also. I tried some Sashimi as an appetizer and it was pretty good. Just make sure you don't eat them together. I suggest eating sushi first if you want to eat both, since Soondubu stew taste is so strong you won't be able to properly enjoy expensive sushi!

and Enjoy!

Remember the Fresh World International Market in Glen Burnie, MD?

It is now under new management called Allgreen. Fresh World seemed to focus more on Latin groceries and etc. I couldn't really find good amount of Korean stuff. But Allgreen seem to organize aisles nicer with clearly labeled aisle signs. I'm not sure how much more Korean stuff they got though...if you know, please let us know if the change is better.

Well for my quick glance, other than the sign and some aisle changes (seemed like they are still figuring out where to place what...very far right wasn't used at all...) nothing much changed. Next time I get to go there, I'll look more into their inventory. Oh, they actually blocked the way to the cashier from the entrance side. I think they did it so that the traffic could flow through all the other side.

Anyhow...Poongnyun Restaurant or the food court remains the same along with the sushi bar. This time we tried Bibimbap (Many Namool/Cooked vegetables served over rice) and Jjamppong (spicy Korean Chinese noodle soup) this time.

Bibimbap was great! A lot of vegetables Mmmmmmmmm...and Jjamppong! my goodness it was way better than Tian. It tasted very classic or traditional should I say? Yummmm and the serving was REALLY large (I'm easy to please LOL)...my friend and I love to eat soup or stew...usually any soup or stew can't beat us (never enough...sigh...) but this Jjamppong had lots and lots for both of us....LOL. My mouth is watering...

We also bought couple sushi to-go ones (no picture sorry). Eh....it was alright but not excellent...Salmon wasn't that nice...but they had interesting rolls. I don't know you might had better experience than I did.

Everyone in my family knows that I don't like cucumber...actually I hate FRESH cucumber. Sorry to FRESH cucumber lovers, but I'm not the only one who hates it. Once I went to a restaurant with two other friends. We got side salads and since I don't eat cucumbers I asked if any of them wanted my gigantic cucumber slices. Usually people look at me weird and gladly take it away from me...but that time both of my friends said they never eat cucumber!! So you see, I'm not alone.

However, as ironic as it may sound...I do LOVE pickles and this spicy cucumber salad! Yummmm!!
In fact, this banchan is my FAVORITE!!!!!! I can eat so much rice with just this alone.

Like I told you before, I hate FRESH cucumber because of that FRESH seed smell, which cucumber lovers like it FRESH... as for me, pickles are 'pickled' and this recipe actually doesn't use the seed part (Keep this in mind to just throw away! or eat it if you must....)

No seeds, spicy, sweet, and fresh crunchy...Mmmmmmmmm...I want some!

Why should you eat this?
1. Eat more vegetables in different ways: In fact, that's the beauty of Korean food! You get to eat vegetables in many tasty ways! Not just regular old salad anymore!
2. Healthy diet and weight loss: more veggies, more benefits your and less greasy stuff means lose weight! Yay!
3. Spicy foods promote and protects health and possibly weight loss too: If you can't take the heat, please don't over do it.

So cucumber lovers or not, as long as you are not allergic to it...
Shall we start?

Ingredients:
5 cucumbers (You know those big fat juicy kind?)
OR 10 small cucumbers
1tbsp salt
1tsp ground garlic
1tsp sesame oil
2tbsp hot red pepper paste
2tsp sugar
OR skip the sugar if you are diabetic like my dad
1tsp roasted sesame seeds (OPTIONAL)
And some chopped green onions!

First, clean and peel the skin off.

Then, cut around the seed center part by cutting one side and turn it to cut the other side, thus making a rectangular remain of the center seed part (Very left one in the pic). DON'T use the seed center part and slice others thinly.

Now, put all the cucumber slices in a mixing bowl and sprinkle salt all around and mix it so all the slices will be 'pickled' briefly. Let it sit for 15 minutes. We are not making Kimchi, so we don't need to let it sit too long. Just enough that it's flexible or soft but still fresh and crunchy.

After 15 minutes, wash them thoroughly. We don't want it to get too salty.

When you are done rinsing it out we need to squeeze out the excess water out. But gently please. If you are too strong...it would all get mushy and lifeless. So gentle firm squeeze will be good. We just need to get enough water out...not to completely dry it out, so don't worry too much.

Add garlic, hot pepper paste, sesame oil, and sugar.

Now, mix it well. You will end up having watery sauce. Don't throw it away. It's part of banchan. You used juicy cucumber after all!

You are done! Serve with rice. You can even eat the extra sauce (watery part) with rice too.

*If red pepper paste is too spicy for you, just add less and vice versa.*

Enjoy!
