Kyu invited some friends over for a Korean BBQ and Grace brought a case of this juice. This BonBon juice has been around for a long time since the 1980's I think. Commercial goes back to that year. Still Koreans love the juice with sac (pulp). And there's a competition brand Lotte SacSac. Both brands have Orange with pulp and Grape Juice with actual peeled grapes...yummm. I like the grape ones! Both brands have been around for a long time and I'm sure people have their preference.

I liked this Bon Bon Orange Juice better than Lotte Sac Sac. I haven't tried grape ones for a long time so I don't know which one I like. I think people over at the BBQ were saying Lotte Grape is better and Haitai BonBon Orange is better. I'll try both brands soon.

I found several old commercials...couldn't find any new ones...

I don't know if they make anymore commercials?
Anyhow it's still fun to watch the old commercials.

Scroll down & enjoy!

8First one was made in 1990. Kim Min Jung (actress) is in it. If you know her, you'll see that she looks the same. Ha ha.

I love Edamame...actually this is the only 'bean' I like LOL...
I could finish the whole bag at once...but I try to control myself. Ha ha

I got this Edamame at H mart for $0.89 on special price. Regular price is not so bad either..around $1.
I think it's a really a good price for healthy nutritious snack...(and it tastes great too!!!)

Simple to prep too...just steam heat...and you're ready to EAT!

I'm actually nibbling on these right now Yum~
Sometimes I sprinkle sea salt but most of the time I like it as it is.

I just put it in my mouth sideways and just 'pop' and drag out the beans...no need to use your hands to open and pick...how do you eat your edamame?

And now it's ALL GONE! I finished it all while posting..sigh..

They seem to have or make special "Pepero Day" peperos for the of occasion too.

Speaking of special days...Korea also has "White Day" in March 14th, when a guy gives a girl candies, which is one month after Valentine's Day. Valentine's Day in Korea is specifically for GUYS... how do you like that guys? hah hah. Then after another month after "White Day" in April, they have "Black Day" where SINGLES eat Jjajangmyun (Black bean paste noodle). I ate Jjajangmyun several times even in the States with my friends too. ^^

Anyhow...Happy Pepero Day to you!

If you are a beginner just like me (Anna) pour water about this much.

Just place a steamer or metal colander and cover. Bring to boil.

When water starts to boil, place frozen mandu like so. Don't overlap them. They'll stick to each other. Cook about 5-8minutes. Our wrapper seemed to be thicker than usual and I cooked about 8-9minutes but the round puffy mandu turns 'wrinkly' and little transparent. Then, you are done!

If you want to add some dipping sauce, I just mixed soy sauce and little vinegar together. Quick and easy sauce. Enjoy!

Weather in MD has been wonderful these days...perfect for spontaneous picnic. One day, the day was perfect for a quick picnic so my friend and I just gathered whatever we could find and started to make rice balls or Joomukbob (in Korean) or Onigiri (if you are more familiar with Japanese). 'Joomuk' means fist or hand probably means handmade or rice formed into a size of about your fist and 'bob' means rice. Not only is this quick and easy, making them together with friends is also fun time itself! Joomukbobs are good for picnic, snacks, and lunch. Easy to carry and easy to eat!

INGREDIENTS
Cooked rice
Sesame Oil
Salt
AND Anything you think will taste good with rice to be used as a stuffing or a wrapper.

This was all we had. But it doesn't matter. Whatever you decide to put in your Joomukbob is totally up to you. We had only Costco's Kirkland bacon bits and some old kimchi. I just quickly fried bacon bits and kimchi together (chopped them nice and small). We had extra bacon bits on the plate. We found some sesame leaves and new rice that's all cooled. down.

If you don't feel like using bare hands just like us, you might want to get a disposable kitchen glove (not the medical rubber stuff LOL). You can buy those in Asian Markets...Lotte or H Mart...etc. I included it in the lower left of the picture. It's very convenient for mixing.

This is what we did...my friend sprinkled little salt and some sesame oil over the cooled rice and mixed nicely. These will not only season the rice, but also will help rice to stick better into different shapes.
We just started to take handful of rice and started to shape them into whatever we wanted to.

I just rolled them into spheres first and then pressed down on the middle to make dents to top with some fried kimchi. Then I just closed little up. My friend just started to randomly add bacon bits and wrapped it with sesame leaves. At the end we just mixed all leftover ingredients together (like fried rice) and shaped them into triangular shapes like onigiri.

We quickly packed them and ate 'em at a park. They were so good! Especially ones wrapped in sesame leaves! Yummm! It was our first time making these and it tasted good! Next time we should try some other stuffings.

Variation suggestions: Tuna salad, spam, any fried rice of your choice, any marinated meat. Just make sure they are chopped finely. Don't be afraid to be creative with your ingredients. Try vegetarian!

Some other ideas for Joomukbob!

Rolled with thinly cooked egg.

Small riceballs covered with finely grated or chopped veggies like carrots and green onion, crushed dried seaweed, finely mashed cooked egg yolks and whites.

Fried rice covered with cooked spam slice, eggs, and dried seaweed. As you can see that these can be basically made into all different kinds of shapes.

Just keep each one small enough so that you can easily eat it in a bite or two. That would also help you control your portions if you are on a strict diet too! That's it! Enjoy!

And everyone PLEASE let us know of any other variations you like or would like to try!

If you wanna get better shapes there are actually rice ball molds available for perfect shaped Joomukbob everytime!

A lot of Koreans have nostalgic childhood memory of this milk since most Koreans went to public bathhouse/sauna regularly and right after the nice hot bath I'm sure many people made it a ritual to drink this Banana Milk.
As you can see the packaging is itself is very interesting and easy to remember.

I visited Binggrae's site and they say that the original bottle design was inspired by Korean traditional jar called Hanggari like below.

Back then, too many people started to leave farm and move to city so the bottle was designed to have a nostalgic effect to people of their hometown. And since then it became a signature packaging that would be burned into everyone's image of Banana Milk and the packaging hasn't changed since then.

Also, one might ask but...why...Banana of all things?

Well...around 70's many Koreans were having malnutrition problem due to lack of food and government recommended people to start drinking more milk to solve that problem. However, many Koreans preferred spicy over anything too sweet or thick and milk was little too sweet and thick for Koreans at that time. However, banana was considered luxurious and expensive fruit for them at that time and being able to taste that flavor in something they can afford like Banana Flavored Milk was the selling point. Korea flourished after that and all food problem got solved but by then everyone already got hooked on Banana Milk and the popularity never subsided.

This packaging is specially made for exporting to other countries including the States. Even here in the States many Korean immigrants get nostalgic over this milk. During the 70's it was a reminder of the hometown and now our native country. Many Koreans are happy to see this milk at the Korean markets and probably still drink this more happily than regular milk. *sip*sip*

Here's one of many commercials from Binggrae. I had to get another one. These girls are popular group called Girls's Generation. Enjoy!

Whew...these days Maryland has been soaked with rain...rain...and more rain...and has been little depressing. Although we had short 'vacation' from rain for couple of days with beautiful days, it seems like we will be getting lots more later on. On these days many Koreans look for nice and hot soup or something fried, like Haemul Pajeon , Seafood Korean style Pancake.

Korean Pancake is not usually made for Breakfast like Pancake you may know. It's usually an appetizer, sidedish, or snack. But you decide what it could be. And you decide what size you want it to be. If you order this in the restaurant, it's usually the size of a whole pizza. I guess you could also say this is Korean pizza. This time we made it smaller just because.

So shall we start?

Ingredients: Makes about 15 palm(your hand) sized pancakes

15 Shrimp
1 Squid
150g crab meat
10 scallions/green onion
1 cup Korean pancake mix
3 cups Korean frying mix
4 cups water

Ok, so clean whole squid and save the body part and the tentacles, clean shrimp (peel off and take out the vein from the top by cutting slightly and pull out the vein), shred crab meat, and cut scallions to 3-4 inches long. Pajeon means Scallion Pancake so Scallions are supposed to be a significant part of this recipe so don't be afraid to cut them big and long!

Mix them together and no need to add salt. It's all premixed in to the pancake and frying mix.

Pour enough oil to fry this pancake. Scoop and spread out as thin as possible and make it into about a palm (your hand) size. Fry at about 7-8 stove temperature knob (DON'T use the Highest Temperature).

Don't forget to flip to cook both sides! And you are DONE!

Enjoy!

*NOTE: If you want Pajeon to be more crispy, add more frying mix than pancake mix and if you want it the other way, then use the opposite proportion.

One day I found this baby formula can on my desk and I wondered why it was there...Hmmm...I know I used to love to 'snack' on baby formula...back in Korea... (yes, I did!) Well not only me, but also my older sister and brother too! We would just spoon them and eat them directly out of the can LOL (we were school aged back then Ha Ha.) For those of you thinking ... why on earth I would snack on baby formula...No, it wasn't because we didn't have food...before the project let me tell you a story...(if you don't want to read just scroll down to the project part Ha hahah.)

MY STORY: When I was very very small, I didn't eat much. To be exact, I barely ate. My parents were so worried that I would only eat a teaspoonful of anything and stop eating. My mom would always say that she was so afraid that I was going to starve myself to death. She tried to prepare anything that she could think of to stimulate my appetite but I always ended up eating only a teaspoonful of food (More food for my siblings! By the way, they loved to finish whatever I didn't eat!!!) I don't know what worked, but these days...they are worried that I eat too much LOL! Anyhow one of those days I guess my mom even tried baby formula since it's tasty enough and has essential nutrients that I was missing greatly on. I was little too old to be fed like infants so she just gave me a spoonful of baby formula powder. I loved it and of course, my sister and brother loved it! We would taste our cousins' formulas too so my mom had to buy US a whole can just for us! (When we came to the States, we remembered how much we loved it and tasted it here, but it seems like the baby formula seems to be less sweet or something tasted quite off..so we stopped eating it.) Hmmm, talking about it kinda makes me taste that Korean baby formula Ha Ha...

Well, back to the present year when I found baby formula can on my desk...so I was wondering why would my mom suddenly give me a formula to eat so randomly...and I felt so stupid that I didn't even tried opening it first cuz it had walnuts in there, which I bought and asked mom to leave me some...my mom just repurposed the can...(so funny how those memories can be triggered back to life so easily and so unconsciously...and so fast)

So I decided that I should do something about the can so I would not get confused again (Yes, I'm that simple!).

These are the things I used. A craft paper, Mod Podge, Brush, and scissors. I forgot to add on to the picture but I also used craft paper cutter since it's easier to cut straight lines easy and fast and also compass to draw easy circle for the round top lid. I chose this paper because I thought it would just blend nicely with the lid color.

(I go to JoAnn Fabrics once in a while and if I'm lucky enough, they have craft paper sales going on and I just stock up on them. I love how they have so many different styles.)

First, I cut out the label from the can carefully so I can get the exact length and height of the can. And I realized that my paper wasn't long enough to cover the can at once. *sigh*

***Before you cut anything PLAN AHEAD. Think what will be good for where first. This will be very important step especially if you have only one copy of that paper.***

I didn't want to patch just one side and make it look too patched up last minute. If you can see the design on the paper it's not repeating pattern either. So I decided to cut them in strips and mix them to kinda create some pattern by alternating strips. One side had borderlike decoration on the side so I cut that part and the middle part had some different designs with some unifying element there as well. Now I have two strips.

I folded them (back and front) to have uniform width strips and cut them.

Now simply use ModPodge and paste strips alternating. Just make sure you put glue on both sides: on to the can and the paper..that made paper stick nicely with out any wrinkles (As you can see from the picture...I found out later...). I overlapped them just little for good coverage.

Then I used compass to get a nice circle and cut out the "compass" design of the paper for my lid. Make sure you brush extra coat of ModPodge on top of the paper as well to give a finished look and a protective layer.

Now, I can enjoy my walnuts (or can put other snacks there too) in style!

I love craft paper! Yay!

I spent:
Craft paper less than $1 ( I bought it during a big sale)

ModPodge Free (Leftover from countless paper crafts/I already got my money's worth)

Baby Formula Can Free (my nephew's can left here)

Total for this project Less than $1 or even Free since I had the paper for the longest time ever.

With my new snack can...I am already excited what I should get for my next snack...or should I make another one? Whew...and here I'm trying to watch my weight...*sigh*
