Remember the Fresh World International Market in Glen Burnie, MD?

It is now under new management called Allgreen. Fresh World seemed to focus more on Latin groceries and etc. I couldn't really find good amount of Korean stuff. But Allgreen seem to organize aisles nicer with clearly labeled aisle signs. I'm not sure how much more Korean stuff they got though...if you know, please let us know if the change is better.

Well for my quick glance, other than the sign and some aisle changes (seemed like they are still figuring out where to place what...very far right wasn't used at all...) nothing much changed. Next time I get to go there, I'll look more into their inventory. Oh, they actually blocked the way to the cashier from the entrance side. I think they did it so that the traffic could flow through all the other side.

Anyhow...Poongnyun Restaurant or the food court remains the same along with the sushi bar. This time we tried Bibimbap (Many Namool/Cooked vegetables served over rice) and Jjamppong (spicy Korean Chinese noodle soup) this time.

Bibimbap was great! A lot of vegetables Mmmmmmmmm...and Jjamppong! my goodness it was way better than Tian. It tasted very classic or traditional should I say? Yummmm and the serving was REALLY large (I'm easy to please LOL)...my friend and I love to eat soup or stew...usually any soup or stew can't beat us (never enough...sigh...) but this Jjamppong had lots and lots for both of us....LOL. My mouth is watering...

We also bought couple sushi to-go ones (no picture sorry). Eh....it was alright but not excellent...Salmon wasn't that nice...but they had interesting rolls. I don't know you might had better experience than I did.

Weeks ago, my family visited Lancaster area in Pennsylvania. Well, to be specific we looked around Amish businesses and markets. Thanks to a pastor who lived in the area, our family was able to look around the local Amish markets. If you are from Lancaster, PA area I guess you know better than I do, but it was a very interesting and tasty weekend for me.

The first Amish store I would like to share is Hayloft Candles.
The place sold homemade ice cream and candles. I didn't pay too much attention to all the stuff till I bought some ice cream, but they had pretty interesting candles. Maybe I should look through more carefully next time.

They had work area right in the store so it was interesting to see the work area.

But I was so focused on getting this ice cream cone that I just skimmed through the store and walked right to the ice cream section. I tried Raspberry and it was only $1/scoop and it was a wonderful ice cream! Not too sweet like store-bought but just right. Mmmmmmm...I want some more....Mmmmmmmmmmmm

It also had a petting zoo right beside the store. It just asks you to make a donation at the entrance.

Here are some pictures I took of some 'starving' animals. Animals seem to be ALWAYS hungry...even our Nine (our dog) is ALWAYS hungry. Sometimes it seems like our Nine seems to eat 24/7.

These animals were all so hungry too..maybe since it was lunch time? Anyhow...this one was just so eager to eat some food that it stuck its head out...I hope it went back in okay.

This peacock...suddenly walked into llama cage where EVERYONE (including the llama who suddenly woke up and paid attention to the peacock) could see it spreading its tails and simply just walked away again folding it back again (show off ...lol). I guess I got lucky with this shot.

And although it was petting zoo..I didn't pet any...looking was enough for me. Eh hehehhehe...although I had some temptation to 'poke' their nose...

And this one was doing whatever it was doing...
There were more animals so if you get to go, say hi to all~

And if I am remembering right, right across this store was small Amish market stand with bunch of homemade stuff and veggies. When we were driving around, I realized that Amish community open up small farmer's markets through out the community as well as right from their home. (You might know better than I do about all of this since it was a new stuff for me.) Anyway this particular market had one big bag of fresh spinach only for $1 something (of course we bought it) and some freshly baked cookies..etc. I regretted not taking enough cash with me. Everything looked so good that I wanted to buy some more to take home.

With all the organic and healthy stuff craze these days..Amish markets are definitely somewhere you can get budget friendly and yummy organic stuff! I'll show you other stores as well...I just wish they were closer.

Yes, there's a dutch market in Burtonsville (which has been 'planning' to move fore months to Laurel). I should go visit it again very soon. I loved their fried chicken wings. But the atmosphere is totally different and seems to be more "Amish" in PA...Let me know what you think of this place if you ever went or planning to..!

(Sept. 2009) Former Fresh World is now Allgreen market under new management. However, the foodcourt in the market is still the same.

Fresh World International Market-El Grande Supermercado recently opened in Glen Burnie, MD on the Ritchie Highway.

It's a huge market with lots of real international stuff and regular necessities. Unlike Lotte or Hmart in Ellicott City, MD, Fresh World has more Latin products. But since it's a huge market they have a variety of products including Korean (of course).

They just opened (November 7th, 2008) a Korean and Japanese foodcourt/restaurant beside the seafood department.

I, of course, had to try it out!

The restaurant's name is 풍년식당 (Poong-nyun) which means 'abundant year'.

They had many different kinds of food and very reasonable price compared to other Korean foodcourts.
When I was there the cashier lady told me that their menu sign was delivered wrong. She said that she ordered BOTH Korean & English menu but only Korean menu sign arrived. If you already visited that pplace and was confused, the cashier lady said English sign is on the way! I also realized that they have more food choices than what's on the picture menu sign.

On the left side of the restaurant they were getting ready to open a petite sushi bar. They have a sign saying that it will open soon. The Japanese sushi bar is open. People were very nice and I ordered one of Combo rolls-California, Rainbow, and spicy Tuna (really really SPICY) only for around $12! It's not as good as Japanese restaurants but it was a good deal and pretty good taste too. I would definitely go back. On top of that, I guess we got there right on time since we got a freebie salmon roll. It was a lot of food for two of us (December 2008).

Well back to the food. Since I LOVE all kinds of soup and stew, I chose Daegu Maeuntang (a cod fish spicy stew) and Japchae Bop (Stir-fried Korean vermicelli with vegetables). Both dish came with a bowl of rice and side of Kimchi (Baechu Kimchi and Ggakduki). Daegu Maeuntang is a stew with cod fish, tofu, mushrooms, radish, korean cabbage, etc. It's spicy and shouldn't have any fish smell if cooked right. Japchae is a stir-fried Korean noodle mixed with lots of veggies.

Daegu Maeuntang ($8.95) was smaller than other restaurants but it was good. It was cheaper too, so I didn't mind the smaller size. I just wished that they had more soup in it though. Although Japchae was little too sweet for my taste and tasted more like some Chinese stir-fried noodles ($8.95), it was pretty ok. The price was reasonable and the serving size was good too.

I'll post some more dish when I get to try other ones. Meanwhile, if YOU get a chance to go there, please let us know what was good and what was not.
Would love to hear from you!
Enjoy and be adventurous!

I went to Jong Kak restaurant in Baltimore city, MD.
It probably is one of the oldest Korean restaurant in Baltimore area. The interior decoration or the restrooms are not as attractive as their food. This restaurant is known for indoor charcoal BBQ of Galbi (Korean style ribs). If you would like to eat Samgyeopsal (or Samgyupsal), pork belly meat, you don't use charcoal BBQ. Instead, they brought out the portable gas range with a grill pan the last time I went there.

Oh! And be aware that there is another restaurant right next to JongKak. I've never been to the other one, but Jongkak is the left one.

Jong Kak servers were very nice and they actually smiled at us! They constantly changed our grill whenever it got too burnt, kept on refilling our veggies and sidedishes. The food was great too. Galbi marinade wasn't too salty and just right for me. I think we ate three bowls of scallion salad, couple refills of banchan, and couple refills of pickled radish. And at the end the servers STILL smiled at us.
So overall, I recommend this place for a BBQ night. I wanna go back for more! Mmmmmmmmm...!

This time we wanted to do some Galbi BBQ. We ordered 2 servings of marinaded Galbi. The price was around $20s per serving. It may be little expensive, but you'll know that it is worth eating when you see that you get the following:

Yum, Yum, Yum!
I just love that steam-cooked eggs. I usually eat this dish as my appetizer. Good dish to start! So soft and good! Bean paste Jjigae was good too. I eat Jjigae with rice and meat. It's always nice to have somekind of soup.
I couldn't take picture of all the sidedishes. These are seasoned tofu, bean sprouts, spicy cucumber salad, Korean style seaweed salad, and Japchae (noodle with veggies). The greatest thing about Banchan is... the unlimited supply of banchan. You can always ask for more of what you like!

They also give you scallion salad, lettuce, pickled radish, green peppers, sliced fresh garlic, Ssamjang (sauce to put in your wrap). All of these are for you to wrap together to eat.

What I like to do with my wrap (Ssam) is to get a slice of pickled radish, a piece of Galbi, sauce, and scallion salad and wrap it up and EAT!
It was so good. I would definitely go back for more!

Jong Kak is located @18W. 20th St. Baltimore, MD 21218 (410)837.5231
