Spinach Salad-Banchan/Sidedish Recipe

Popeye eats spinach straight out of can. I prefer fresh ones...heh heh...or just cooked fresh...you know what I mean.

Once a friend told me she ate a very healthy meal...spinach salad. Yes that's good but let me show you an alternative way...Asian way...of eating spinach, as a Banchan/Sidedish with rice. I think that's little more filling than just a salad heh heh.

Just slightly cook and mix with sesame oil and salt and you are done!
Okay..okay...I'll be little more specific...scroll down!

Ingredients

1 bunch spinach
1 tsp salt
2 cups water

(Mix)
1-3 chopped scallions
1/2 tsp Sesame Oil
1/4 tsp salt

(OPTIONAL)
Little garlic
1/2 tsp sesame seeds

Let's Start!

Wash spinach thoroughly several times so you don't have to wash it after it's cooked.

Add salt to water and bring it to boil. When the water starts to boil put clean spinach and let it sit only for about 2 minutes. No longer than that!

Take spinach out and drain water. If it's too hot just briefly wash spinach once and squeeze excess water out. Cut spinach twice (into bite size).

Now just mix spinach with scallions, sesame oil, salt and sesame seeds (and garlic if you want).

Serve with rice and other banchan. If you didn't make it too salty, feel free to just eat it by itself.

That's all!

As you get familiar with the basic spices and sauces for Korean food, like sesame oil, feel free to add more or less depending on your preference. After all it is to please you not me ^^. Beauty of cooking after all is to adjust to your liking right?

Enjoy!

Yum! I love this dish. Do you think I would lose weight if I ate nothing but this with kimchi and rice every day? I think I could do it!

I’m not an expert but eating Asian dishes (not American Chinese…) usually helps with weight control. Especially since it’s not fried.

These days I have been eating pizza and burgers for lunch at work since we eat together and my belly started to get more out of control and I started to eat more veggies too! We’ll see…

Just make sure you don’t eat too much rice though!Or you might want to mix white rice with other healthy options… Eat more side dishes and not too salty ^^ and it should benefit you!

Good luck and if you really decide to do it, let me know how it turned out!

    Substitute brown rice!

  4. Anna says:

Yes John ^^ that should be better ^^

A very simple yet nutritious meal. But if you are on weight control, I suggest remove or lessen the rice intake, for rice is carb. Pure green dish like spinach is a good way to start a diet. If you wont mind I’d love to guide Foodista readers to your post. Just add the foodista widget to the end of this post so it will appear in the Foodista pages and it’s all set, Thanks!

Yes they are tasy and simple to do.
You can basically use the same recipe and substitute spinach with bean sprouts with same sauce and get bibimbap ingredients. If you know what that is.

As for getting more muscular? is that what you mean?
Hmmm…I don’t really know if Korean food helps you get muscular….
      Only chicken breast? and supplements?

I think Korean food rather helps you with balanced diet by having all different kinds of food to eat. Veggies, meat, carbs…etc…
